Points in Flensburg: Checking, reducing, expiry – the complete system

Last updated: July 2026

What do you get points for in the first place?

Points in Flensburg – in the driving fitness register (Fahreignungsregister, FAER) – are only given for offences that affect road safety, starting at fines of 60 € and up. Illegal parking earns no points, whereas 21 km/h over the limit already earns one.

  • 1 point: serious regulatory offence (e.g. 21 km/h over the limit, phone at the wheel)
  • 2 points: particularly serious regulatory offence with a standard driving ban (e.g. qualified red light violation, drink-driving)
  • 3 points: criminal offences (e.g. drunk driving from 1.1 per mille)

The measure levels

Points balance Level
1–3 Recorded – no measure yet
4–5 Reprimand (Ermahnung) (subject to a fee), voluntary driving fitness seminar possible
6–7 Warning (Verwarnung) (subject to a fee), no further point reduction possible
8+ Revocation of the driving licence – reissue usually only after a medical-psychological assessment (MPU)

You can run through your balance in the points calculator – and query it officially free of charge at the Federal Motor Transport Authority (Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt) (online with ID card function, by post or in person in Flensburg).

Reducing points

With a maximum of 5 points, you can attend a driving fitness seminar (Fahreignungsseminar) once every five years and thereby remove 1 point. From 6 points onwards this is no longer possible – then only waiting and driving without further offences will help.

When do points expire?

Each entry expires on its own (new entries do not extend old ones):

  • 1-point offences: 2.5 years
  • 2-point offences: 5 years
  • 3-point criminal offences: 10 years

The most important consequence for your proceedings

Every final point brings you closer to the next measure level – and at a balance of 6–7 points, one single additional point decides the fate of your driving licence. At that stage at the latest, no fine notice (Bußgeldbescheid) should be accepted unchecked. The free initial review shows you whether fighting back is worth it.
