Caught speeding during the probationary period: A-offence, advanced seminar & co.
Last updated: July 2026
The magic threshold: 21 km/h
During the two-year probationary period (Probezeit), it is not just the fine that counts. What matters is the classification as an A- or B-offence:
- A-offence (serious): speeding by 21 km/h or more, red light violation, phone at the wheel, alcohol
- B-offence (less serious): e.g. worn tyres, licence plate violations
So 19 km/h over the limit only costs money – 21 km/h costs money plus an advanced seminar plus a probationary period extended by two years.
The escalation ladder during the probationary period
- First A-offence (or two B-offences): advanced seminar (Aufbauseminar – mandatory, at your own expense, approx. 250–500 €) and extension of the probationary period to four years
- Second A-offence: written warning, recommendation of traffic psychology counselling
- Third A-offence: revocation of the driving licence
Alcohol: zero tolerance
Until your 21st birthday and throughout the entire probationary period, a strict ban on alcohol at the wheel applies (sec. 24c StVG) – including on an e-scooter. Even the first beer costs 250 €, one point, and counts as an A-offence with all its consequences.
Why an appeal pays off twice during the probationary period
For novice drivers, it is almost never about the fine: The advanced seminar costs more than most fines, and the extended probationary period raises the risk of losing the licence for years. If the allegation can be pushed below the 21 km/h threshold, or the measurement brought down entirely, all probationary period measures fall away completely.
Borderline cases in particular (21–25 km/h) are especially open to challenge because of the tolerance deduction and possible measurement errors. Have your case reviewed free of charge – before you book the seminar.
